Las Vegas renhållningsarbetare röstar för att godkänna en strejk
Republic Services, ett amerikanskt avfallshanteringsföretag, ”måste ställas till svars”, sa en anställd när personalen röstade för en strejk.
Enligt International Brotherhood of Teamsters (ITA) fick strejken en ”överväldigande” majoritet, med mer än 1 200 medlemmar i fackföreningens lokalavdelning 631 i Las Vegas som stödde åtgärden.
Republic är ett företag för insamling och bortskaffande av avfall som betjänar företag i hela USA, inklusive Las Vegas McCarran International Airport, kasinon och andra turistattraktioner.
En strejk skulle troligen orsaka stora störningar i avfallstransporterna i hela staden, men medlemmarna i Teamsters lokalavdelning 631 anser att en sådan åtgärd kan vara nödvändig för att sända Republic Services ett budskap.
Samuel Bronson, en 18-årig kommersiell chaufför på Republic Services och medlem i Local 631, kritiserade företagens behandling av sina anställda och sade att det var dags för Republic ”att förhandla i god tro och förhandla fram ett rättvist avtal”.
”Vi har varit hängivna arbetare under hela pandemin och har tjänat i frontlinjen för att hålla Las Vegas rent och säkert. Detta har inneburit att vi har riskerat vår hälsa och vårt välbefinnande”, sade Bronson.
Han tillade: ”Företaget kallar mig och mina kollegor för hjältar, men de behandlar oss inte så på jobbet. Faktum är att de inte ens behandlar oss med vanlig mänsklig anständighet.
”Vi kan inte längre stå ut med denna behandling. Denna omröstning återspeglar vår övertygelse om att vi förtjänar bättre. Republic Services måste hållas ansvariga.”
Local 631 och Republic Services kommer att återvända till förhandlingsbordet senare under månaden. Det nuvarande avtalet löper ut den 31 maj.
Chuck Stiles, chef för Teamsters Solid Waste and Recycling Division, kommenterade: ”Republic Services kommer att göra allt för att krossa facket.
”Deras beteende under förhandlingarna med Local 631 visar att de inte har lärt sig någonting det senaste året. Republikens anställda har fått nog.
”De har fått nog. Över hela landet kämpar våra medlemmar tillbaka och talar om för företaget att de inte tänker ta det längre.”
